I hear the lament often, “there is no beauty anymore” oft followed by a disdainful cry asking “what happened to the craftsmen?” Rounded out with the scornful half scoffed statement; “We used to build things here”…

Now this is not a simple issue to address, it’s fault doesn’t lay in any one place. We are sold lifestyles we can’t afford, the economies of scale which favour efficiency of production over craft go great ways to delivering that lifestyle on a budget whilst eradicating the artisans who shaped it. A mix of equal access, its positives, and enshitification enshroud us.

Our stagnating wages, and corporations endless pursuit of profit have squeezed us like stones, till we bleed of crack. Not only can we no longer afford to buy the result of craft, few can afford the risk of dedicating their lives to that craft in the first place.

So what can we do?

We can use the few free tools we have. We can shape our online world in such a way that it alters our physical one. We can share like post all the things they tell us have no value. Through art we can define the language of our culture. We can champion the ideals and imagery that shape a more beautiful world.

Through our use of time on we can place value on these works. We can refuse to create content which only serves to feed subliminal advertising, Astro turf campaigns, algorithms for profit, and as the young like to say “psyops”.

We can take wheatpaste and rattle can to the street, we can write on walls both physical and digital, we can talk to the day of poetry, of the personal and the populous. We can reclaim the visual landscape and so shift the cultural one.

We help others see more, so they may in turn be more.
